American Gypsy Jazz. 7:30. Two 45-minute sets with a 15 minute intermission. $10/advance, $12/door.

Ameranouche is an award-winning trio that features the solo guitar work of Richard Sheppard, rhythm guitarist Ryan Flaherty, and upright bassist, Xar Adelberg. Together, they cultivate a vigorous energy that arrives in a familiar package; a diverse demographic can relate immediately. Ameranouche formed in 2004, and has been charging ahead, touring year round, ever since. In 2008, they were the first Gypsy jazz group ever to play at the JVC Newport Jazz Festival (which originated in the 1950s), and received a standing ovation, opening for Sonny Rollins and Herbie Hancock. In 2007, three of their original compositions were featured on a National Lampoon Soundtrack. In 2006, they released their first CD, and have since released a second -- both to critical acclaim. Having already achieved two "Best of New Hampshire" awards in '08 and '09, Ameranouche is already arguably the hottest, hardest swinging acoustic group out of New England. Hear them live, and be launched.

Sunday, 2/14 – the Swingtones. Big Band Swing Music. 7:00 – 9:30. $10/advance, $12/door.

The Swingtones, under the direction of Marvin Haber, have developed an all-ages following spanning northern New England. Appearing at several Valley venues and for a number of town events, the appeal for swing music is apparent at any venue for any age listener. Haber has over 45 years experience as a trumpeter for Buddy Morrow, Les Brown, Doc Severson, Ralph Flanagan, and other famous swing bands of the 50’s and 60’s. Kristen Corrigan is the band’s manager, marketer, sound engineer, dance instructor, and sometimes vocalist. She has over 20 years of experience as a disk jockey, master of ceremonies, and event planner.

Friday, 2/19 – Toughcats. Bluegrass Indie Rock. 7:30. Two 45-minute sets with a 15 minute intermission. $10/advance, $12/door.

The Toughcats— Energetic. Catchy. Fun. Exciting. Danceable. Memorable. Loveable. Beautiful. Amazing. At times, unabashedly hirsute. This is not the Toughcats ad on Matchmaker.com; these are just some of the words die-hard Toughcats fans mutter in their sleep after a performance. With their unusual sound, a blend of old timey bluegrass, thoughtful indie rock, and classic pop twitches a la early Beatles, they bring their audience a best of both worlds scenario: timeless music that is at once unquestionably danceable and haltingly listenable.

Saturday, 2/20 – Mango Groove. Steel Drum Band. 7:30. Two sets of music and audience participation in games. $10/5 adults/children (4-12) in advance, $12/6 at door.

Mango Groove is an authentic steel band featuring the uplifting Caribbean sound of traditional steel pans. Their pan ensemble consists of a full range of steel pans — lead pan, alto pans, guitar pans and bass pans — to which they add a conventional drum set and an array of traditional percussion instruments. The result is a full, rich sound with the infectious rhythm
that only a steel band can create. They always create a variety of dance music— calypso, reggae, jazz, motown, and more—all with a true Caribbean flavor. Their performances and workshops include Afro-Caribbean drumming and dance, and the audience is always invited to "jump up" ... learn the dances, do the Limbo, join in with the fun.

Family Fun Days

Join us for Family Fun Days in the 100 Acre Wood every Saturday from 1/9 - 3/27. It is the delightful tale of the miser, Ebenezer Scrooge, and his clerk, Bob Cratchit. Through visits from the spirits of the season, Scrooge learns the true meaning of Christmas. In this charming tale, we hope to educate the audience about the class system of Victorian England and encourage them to help others that are less fortunate than they are. We will host a matinee performance for local elementary school students at 11:00 on the same day as the evening performance, which will be open to the public. The cost is $5 for adults and $3 for children (children 4 and under are free). This program is geared towards children in grades K-8 and their parents.

We would like to thank our sponsors:

Poland Spring (Platinum Patron)
http://www.polandspring.com/
Located in the beautiful state of Maine, the spring water sources of Poland Spring® Brand Natural Spring Water are the places where mother earth and our monitoring and collection process have coexisted in harmony for generations.

Varsity Beverage (Silver Patron)
http://www.pepsi.com/
Pepsi has been bringing fun and refreshment to consumers for over 100 years. Lucy, president of the Believe in Books Literacy Foundation, which annually presents the Polar Express train rides as a fund-raiser, will unveil plans at a community open house Wednesday from 4 to 6 p.m. for the organization's forthcoming “Theater in the Wood.”

The facility is located near the Mount Washington Observatory's facility at 41 Observatory Way across from Town Hall Road and off Route 16.
The 100-seat, two-building facility during Polar Express season in late November and December has been better known these past five years as the North Pole but it is about to take on a greater role, if the vision of Lucy and Believe in Books comes into fruition.

“At the open house on the 14th, we'll be telling everyone about some of our potential plans and possible uses,” said Lucy.
He says the board of directors of Believe in Books embraced the concept of a performing arts center and/or gallery five years ago.
“We've been working hard these past five years, and we've still got work to do. But we want people to come up and take a look. We'll have some representatives of the arts community here; we've put out some feelers, and we're looking to discuss the possibilities. We see it as performing arts, but we don't want to limit ourselves, so we say it's performing arts and then some,” said Lucy.
He said in essence, the facility is “a theater in the half-round.”
“With the series of platforms we can change the layout or take the seats out completely, which gives us the ability to have different types of activities. So, yes, it can host entertainment, but more,” said Lucy.
He said pending all state and local approvals, the facility's seating may be expanded to as many as 400 seats from the 100 it has now. He said he has obtained a permit from the state fire marshal's office and will be speaking with town officials in the next few days for an occupancy permit as the paperwork gets processed from Concord to the local level.
Selectmen chair Gene Chandler said the board has not yet discussed those plans but said that Lucy currently has a permit for a sugar shack and a sign.
“Obviously, we are booked for later in November and December for our Polar Express runs but we will be looking for more events in the months to come throughout the year,” said Lucy.
He said the facility will not be staffed with food services, but he said groups looking to use the facility may hire their own caterers.
He lauded the view and facility and hopes it will find a niche with local arts and performing arts groups to fit in with other facilities in the region, including Salyards Center for the Arts in Conway, M&D Productions' Your Community Theater, the Mount Washington Valley Arts Association, and the Mount Washington Valley Theatre Company.

“This is a year-round building that's ready with ample parking so from an infrastructure standpoint it is in really good shape summer or winter, and inside, it is very flexible. We also have a professional lighting and sound system all set up,” noting that the facility also is equipped with a commercial sprinkler and alarm system.

He said the facility is owned by Believe in Books Literacy Foundation.
At the outset, that organization will serve as the operator of the theater.
“We will change that structure eventually. It was never our intent to own and operate a theater but under the circumstances, we are in that position for the time being. Whether a different organization takes it over some day remains to be seen,” said Lucy, who is a past executive director of the Mount Washington Valley Chamber of Commerce and a member of the Lucy clan which has been settled in Conway for more than 200 years.

“We are a literacy foundation, not an operator — but we are making it happen. The foundation may use it for a fund-raising activity of its own or for a literacy programming venue ourselves, so we will become a tenant at times for our own uses,” Lucy said.

He said Believe in Books recently moved its quarters to a building next to the Mount Washington Observatory's former LIDAR facility on Observatory Way. He said that facility is not currently functioning as it is not currently funded by grants as it was in the past.

According to the group's Web site, the Believe in Books Literacy Foundation has “a broadening mission to enhance the quality of life by education, promotion, encouragement and aide to those of all ages in the appreciation of reading and literature, making a positive impact on literacy. Each visit includes a volunteer dressed as a storybook character, a volunteer reading, and the gift of a book to each child. Over 30,000 books have been given out through this program in just five years.

The “Books in Character” Programs are currently serving Carroll, Coos, and Grafton Counties of NH; and Oxford County in Western Maine.

As part of this program, Corduroy will be visiting area preschools October 2 - 16, 2009 with his friends to share a story and a visit. All of the children will get a chance to hear a Corduroy story read to them by one of Corduroy's friends and will be able to interact with Corduroy himself! The children will also be able to select a book to take home that Corduroy brought for them.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_h-Z9lEBObCU/SsT3ENCZMQI/AAAAAAAAAA4/JbYvdCVzBRI/s320/Pumpkin+People.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5387702705833193730" />
Stop by and check out our pumpkin people, based on the book Little Bear's Visit by Else Holmelund Minarik. The cold and the wind didn't seem to phase the men who wore kilts in the various colors of the many klans participating at the event.

Thousands of people streamed through the gates leading to the many Klan tents, food vendors and Scottish game venues. The delightful sound of bagpipes echoed throughout the area as people ambled about eating haggis on the run or tasting the finest single malt whiskey, Scotland offers for those who tip the cup.

Believe in Books set up a tent that was ultimately blown down by the frisky winds and destroyed. We were able to procure another tent and we set up our display espousing the virtues of our non-profit foundation promoting literacy for the very young among us. As the day warmed, the crowds swelled and an obvious bonny time was had by all.It was a weekend for all to feel a wee bit Scottish no matter what their heritage might truly be.

2009 Volunteer Lottery!!

Don't forget to tune in to WMWV tonight at 7:00 for the drawing of names in our Polar Express volunteer lottery!

2009 Volunteer Lottery!!

If you are one of the many who have volunteered for us over the past twelve months, be sure to enter our Volunteer Lottery! This year The Believe in Books Literacy Foundation joined the Mt. Washington Valley Ski Touring annual event by providing a refreshment stop located trailside, serving hot cocoa to hundreds of chocoholics throughout the day. BIBLF also provided some entertainment with a few of their favorite “characters on skis” and sold merchandise to help raise funds for their “Books in Character” Outreach Reading Program.

The program visits area preschools with a larger-than-life storybook character, a volunteer storyteller who shares a few stories with the class, and the gift of a new book to children from over 1,200 households during each outing. This important new literacy program provides the gift of a brand new baby book to each newborn, and the opportunity to enroll in the program that provides free books until the age of five. The newborn’s first book comes in a specially made fleece pouch and contains important information on reading to your baby and the positive effects of early exposure to books and literacy. Once a child is enrolled in the program a new book will be mailed to them during each important developmental stage for a total of 12 free books.

Executive Director of the Believe in Books Literacy Foundation explains why providing free books to babies is so important. “Although babies don’t seem to understand books, reading to babies actually helps to develop essential communication, cognitive, and social skills. It is the hope of the Literacy Foundation that all children born in the North Country have equal access to books and a jump start on learning.” Hospital staff agree that the Books from Birth program not only helps facilitate early literacy skills, but also helps facilitate early family bonding…
Hearing speech- develop communication and early literacy skills

Quote from Kris Discholias- Family Birthing Center Clinical Resource Manager: Kris Dascoulias,
Family Birthing Center of Memorial Hospital

Like so many non-profits in the Mount Washington Valley, the Believe in Books Literacy Foundation relies on the efforts of their dedicated volunteers to fulfill their mission of supporting literacy initiatives throughout New England.

The Believe in Books Literacy Foundation, known best for their Polar Express fundraising event, is a North Country nonprofit 501 (c) 3 organization supported by hundreds of dedicated volunteers from the communities they serve. Each child born in these hospitals will receive a brand new book, and the opportunity to enroll in the program which will mail quality age-appropriate books to each child during important developmental stages until the age of five.

Mr. A.O. Lucy, Executive Director of the Believe in Books Literacy Foundation, explains why providing free books to babies is so important. “Although babies don’t seem to understand books, reading to babies actually helps to develop essential communicative, cognitive, and social skills. It is the hope of the Literacy Foundation that all children born in the North Country have equal access to books and a jump start on learning.” Hospital staff agrees that the Books from Birth program not only helps facilitate early literacy skills, but also encourages early family bonding. “It’s great to see new parents using their baby’s first book right away and reading together as a family right in the hospital,” says Memorial Hospital’s Family Birthing Center Clinical Resource Manager Ms. Kris Dascoulias.

In addition to receiving a new book and an opportunity to enroll in the “Books from Birth” program, new families will also receive important information about reading to their baby all in a snuggly fleece pouch. Families in the Memorial Speare hospital will receive their pouch and first book courtesy of the Ashland Women’s Group run by Ms. Noreen Crawford, whose group gathers monthly to create the pouches and fill them with books and information. Volunteer opportunities to participate in the “Books from Birth” program are available in the Believe in Books North Conway office as well.

By five years old each child enrolled in the program will have their own “Books from Birth” library with twelve books. And if that child is enrolled in an area preschool, their library will continue to grow as they receive new books through the Literacy Foundation’s Books in Character Outreach Reading program. Mr. Lucy says of the Literacy Foundation, “We believe that providing quality books in the home is one of the best ways to encourage a love of reading, we hope that through our fundraisers and program sponsorships we may someday bring books to all the children born in the state of New Hampshire.”

The Believe in Books Literacy Foundation, known best for their Polar Express fundraising event, is a North Country nonprofit 501 (c)(3) organization supported by hundreds of dedicated volunteers from the communities they serve. Young and old alike competed in this strongman type contest, which pits teams against one another in a timed competition involving pushing a 50,000 pound caboose down the tracks! The Push for Literacy serves as a fundraiser for the Literacy Foundation’s Books from Birth initiative. Many thanks go out to Paul Yorkis for donating the use of his beautiful caboose, Paul says, “this is a great cause, in my line of work I see way too few books in too many homes.”

Dozens of spectators and supporters stood by as team members flexed their muscles on the Hobo’s tracks. First place trophies were awarded to the InnSeason Railmen who pushed their caboose 100 feet in only 30 seconds! Additional prizes were also awarded for the second place team, and team with the most pledges. Teams are encouraged to gather pledges in addition to the $60 registration fee for the event. All funds raised go toward supporting the Books from Birth initiative in both The Memorial Hospital in North Conway and The Speare Memorial Hospital in Plymouth. “It was a great event for a great cause, 70 newborns will receive free books thanks to the funds raised,” explains Heather Nolen, Lincoln/Woodstock Manager for Believe in Books. The Books from Birth program provides free books and literacy information to all newborns, and the opportunity to enroll in the program which sends another book to the child during each important developmental stage until the age of five.

The Believe in Books Literacy Foundation would like to thank all participating teams from Tim’s White Mountain Garage, Lincoln Police Department, Laconia Savings Bank, InnSeason South Mountain, The Landing at Loon Mountain, Clark’s Trading Post, Prudential Moosilauke Realty, Woodstock Fire Department, and the FBLA from LinWood School, as well as the wonderful volunteers that helped make the 2nd annual Push for Literacy a success.

The Believe in Books Literacy Foundation, known best for their Polar Express fundraising event, is a North Country nonprofit 501 (c) 3 organization supported by hundreds of dedicated volunteers from the communities they serve. This year, the Literacy Foundation was able to expand their program to incorporate 17 new preschools with over 500 combined students in areas of both Coos and Grafton counties. Program Director Aimee Janowicz stresses how important it was for BIBLF to bring Books in Character to these new areas, “Many of the new schools we visit serve low-income families who can not purchase books for their children, and many of the schools are struggling as well, some schools did not have any books for the children before our program came along.”

The Books in Character program helps develop early literacy skills in a number of ways. During each outreach outing a larger-than-life storybook character visits the children to excite them about reading and form a positive connection with books. A volunteer storyteller then shares a few of the character’s stories with the class. Finally, the classroom library is presented with one of the character’s children’s books, and each child is given their very own book to take home to help facilitate future reading with their family. BIBLF visits each preschool at least six times during the school year with a new character, story, and variety of books to keep encouraging a love of books and reading that has been proven essential to a child’s future success in school.

As a finale to the program this year BIBLF surprised classrooms with bringing not one, but two larger-than-life characters along with them in the form of George and Martha two fun-loving hippos created by author James Marshall. “The kids really loved it and talked about the visits for weeks,” stated Director of Kids Only Daycare in Berlin, Ms. Jane LeBlanc. Bringing these two characters not only excited the children about books and reading, but also exposed the children to new stories they may not have previously discovered.

In the four years since the inception of the Books in Character program BIBLF has given out over 20,000 books and helped encourage the healthy development of early literacy skills in hundreds of the region’s children. States BIBLF’s Executive Director Mr. A.O. Lucy “We are happy to bring our outreach program to these new schools, and we hope that with continued support we may continue bringing our literacy programs to even more areas in need.”

The Believe in Books Literacy Foundation, known best for their Polar Express fundraising event, is a North Country nonprofit 501 (c) 3 organization supported by hundreds of dedicated volunteers from the communities they serve. The net proceeds of their efforts go toward supporting literacy initiatives throughout Northern New England. – On June 28th over 80 participants arrived at the Lincoln Village Shops to compete in the first annual Race for Reading. The Race is the newest fundraiser for the Believe in Books Literacy Foundation (BIBLF), who produces other great events like the upcoming Push for Literacy and the famous Polar Express Event. Runners of all ages, walkers, families, strollers and even some cute canines made their way across the finish line of this community fundraising event.

Race participants paid their entry fees in a combination of books and funds that will go toward bringing the Bookbag Program to the Lincoln Public Library. The Believe in Books Literacy Foundation’s Bookbag Program provides children and their families with bookbags on loan filled with quality children’s books. Bookbags are available for children ages 3 up through 6th grade reading levels. “Usually a library will pay for half the costs to start a Bookbag program, but the funds from the Race for Reading will allow us to bring 10 bookbags to the Lincoln Public Library free of charge,” explains Ms. Heather Nolen, Lincoln-Woodstock Manager for the Literacy Foundation. Bookbags will be available to check out of the library on loan later in August.

The Race for Reading was not the only event The Believe in Books Literacy Foundation contributed to Lincoln’s “Splash into Summer Weekend,” on Sunday June 29th the Literacy Foundation also donated their time and two of their larger-than-life storybook characters to the Lincoln Chamber of Commerce’s “Character Breakfast” at the Woodstock Inn Station and Brewery. Winnie-the-Pooh, and his friend Tigger, delighted visitors and locals alike by greeting guests, posing for pictures, and handing out bookmarks to hold their place in the next Winnie-the- Pooh book they read!

The Believe in Books Literacy Foundation would like to thank all the wonderful volunteers and sponsors who gave their time and efforts to make The Race for Reading a success. The Race for Reading is a 5K Fun Run/Walk taking place 9:00am Saturday, June 28, 2008 at the Lincoln Village Shops. Staffers are busy preparing for this event, which differs from other races in the area by allowing all family members a chance to compete and win prizes.

BIBLF’s Lincoln Manager and event organizer, Ms. Heather Nolen conceptualized The Race for Reading to serve not only as a new community event, but also as a fundraiser to support literacy programs throughout the Lin-Wood area. Participants in the Race for Reading may choose to pay the $20 entrance fee, or they may pay only $10 along with the donation of a brand new book. All books collected during The Race for Reading will be distributed to a school or library following the event. Says Ms. Nolen, “We hope the Race for Reading becomes a great annual event and allows us to allocate all collected books and proceeds to a different literacy program in need of support each year.”

In the four years since the Believe in Books Literacy Foundation has joined the Lin-Wood community they have not only brought the famous Polar Express Event along, but several other fundraising events as well such as The Push for Literacy, and the recent Hunt for Literacy. These fundraising events allow for the Literacy Foundation to run programs like their Outreach Reading Program, and Bookbag Program, as well as help support the efforts of other organizations with the goal of nurturing a love of reading. The Race for Reading is another event that will help fulfill the Believe in Books Literacy Foundation’s mission of supporting literacy initiatives throughout the North Country.

The Believe in Books Literacy Foundation is a nonprofit 501 (c) 3 organization guided by a volunteer Board of Directors, and supported by hundreds of dedicated volunteers from the communities they serve. Winning teams of this year’s annual Hunt for Literacy were comprised of both local competitors, as well as visitors to the area. Team Brewzter Captain Katya Maiser of Lincoln, N.H. was happy to accept her $1,000 dollar cash prize on behalf of her team comprised of friends from both near and far.
The Hunt for Literacy is a scavenger hunt taking place throughout the White Mountains of New Hampshire each May where teams of up to six people drive to areas of interest throughout the region chasing clues, competing in games, and solving trivia in an effort to win the Grand Prize.

Great Prizes like cash, Polar Express tickets, and White Mountain Attraction passes weren’t the only reason that teams participated in the Hunt though. Many contestants simply enjoyed the chance to experience a fun new adventure while supporting the efforts of the Believe in Books Literacy Foundation. Explains Hunt participant Wendy Neal, ‘Not only do we get to support a great cause and enjoy a fun family adventure together, but [The Hunt] has also created lifelong memories for our children.”

The top prize of $2,500 went to the Notch Navigators team, a family residing near Concord, N.H. who had also participated in last year’s Hunt. Whether local or visitor all teams agreed that the scavenger hunt provided a great challenge and exposed them to new sites. One local team even sited “seeing new places that we had driven by but never stopped at before” as the highlight of their experience.

The Hunt for Literacy is one of the newer fundraising events of the Believe in Books Literacy Foundation. The Hunt focuses on raising funds for their Outreach Reading Program, where storytellers and larger-than-life characters visit area preschools to share a story with the class and present the gift of a brand new book for each child to take home and share with their family.

The Believe in Books Literacy Foundation, known best for their Polar Express fundraising event, is a North Country nonprofit 501 (c) 3 organization supported by hundreds of dedicated volunteers from the communities they serve.
